This short story was serialised in London Society during May-June 1868, and was later published in Strange Stories in 1889, a collection of ghost tales by a number of authors, including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The Athenaeum described it as comprising “fourteen sensational stories most of which have been contributed by more or less eminent hands…Miss Florence Marryat’s…is the cleverest story in the book and also the most unpleasant.”
