Victorian Spiritualism: Florence Marryat by Dr Tatiana Kontou (Oxford Brookes)

12th March 2014, Treadwell’s Bookshop, 33 Store Street, London WC1E 7BS

florence_marryatd5c5c1.1Tonight we meet Florence Marryat (1833-1899), a Victorian novelist,  periodical editor, playwright, actress, and singer. She  was also an avid spiritualist who wrote about her experiences in her fiction and in her memoirs There is No Death (1891) and The Spirit World (1894). Through Marryat, Tatiana Kontou shows how gender, writing, gothic motifs and sensationalism all fed into the world of English Victorian spiritualism. The seance room was a far more theatrical place than is often realised. Tatiana Kontou is Senior Lecturer in Nineteenth-century Literature at Oxford Brookes. She has interests in Victorian spiritualism and Psychical Research and is the author of Spiritualism and Women’s Writing.
